Disappointing mash-up of A Rake’s Progress and Dinner at Eight that misfires the period rudeness of The Favourite to achieve something more like 15 certificate Horrible Histories. Great ideas are there but something hurt the execution of a fascinating prospect, and ramming the Barry Lyndon connection home with a relentlessly Kubrickian soundtrack becomes annoying. Errors in continuity and dialogue glare in a production that doesn’t hang together from the off.
The relationship between the Savages – or the Wayne and Waynettas of 18th century aristocracy - is what could have set it apart, and although Claire Foy’s statement of solidarity suggests the potential for depth, sadly Richard E Grant’s wayward portrayal of a ‘charmingly’ rogue-ish cad unbalances what could have been a disarming take on an unusual romance. A wasted lead role opportunity in the midst of a welcome Richard E Grant revival.
